Emptying our heads supports us to regain a sense of calm & clarity.

How often do you empty your head?

In my experience, many people use the coaching space to empty their head; this is particularly useful for clients who are feeling overwhelmed, because it creates some distance between their thoughts and feelings. It allows them to zoom out.

Zooming out of a particular situation / challenge isn’t always easy to do, as life pressures don’t often provide dedicated opportunities for us to think and process situations in this way. Many of my clients feel as though they are just living from one day to the next and this is something I resonate with in my own life.

Neuroscience tells us that, when we’re feeling under emotional/mental pressure, we operate in ‘survival brain’ mode, where it becomes excessively difficult to think creatively and logically. The brain is purely focused on surviving and shuts down battery power to the executive thinking part of our brain: the pre-frontal cortex.

However, emptying our heads supports us to regain a sense of calm and - with the right support (e.g. a coach) - we can gain a sense of clarity and a fresh perspective. We can start to process things with a different mindset and consider how we might tackle things differently.

This client came to our session feeling overwhelmed and stressed about a specific area of their life. At the end of our session, they wanted to feel “a bit better” – to have some “relief”.

We used the space to reflect on what’s currently happening for them and how they want to move forward with this situation; how they want to feel differently about it. We also explored what needs to change and what small step could start this process.

At the end of our session, they felt “happier”, “less tense” and as though a "weight had been removed from their shoulders”.

I'd love to hear from you about:

How often you get the opportunity to zoom out of your life.

How easy you find it to take a fresh perspective on things.

What might happen if you took a bird’s eye view of your life or a particular situation.

If you too are feeling overwhelmed and need some space to empty your head, let’s talk and see if we’re a good fit to work together.
