Noticing snippets of JOY is so beneficial to our wellbeing.

Updated: Apr 22, 2024

Today, I want to talk about the power of noticing JOY, particularly the small joys that can pepper our everyday.

Yesterday, my day was full of small, simple joys.

Going about our day-to-day lives, on what can feel like the hamster wheel of life, it’s easy to miss the small things that brighten our day - that re-energise us, but noticing - and acknowledging - the good things, the snippets of joy, is so beneficial to our wellbeing.

As a coach with a positive psychology approach, clients & I often explore joy; what joy means to them as an individual, and how they might bring more of it into their everyday. Joy means different things for different people - it is as unique as we are.

My experience of coaching clients has taught me that there can be a misconception that joy mainly comes from the big things in life - the milestone events, but true JOY is often found in the small, everyday things. We just need to notice it.

So, I hope you'll indulge me whilst I notice, and acknowledge, the small joys that brightened my day yesterday.

1. My working day started by meeting a fellow coaching colleague, and friend, for a coffee. We meet very regularly for peer coaching sessions and it’s always such a supportive, insightful conversation 💓.

2. I coached three fantastic 1:1 clients: two are established clients, who are visibly reaping the rewards of the time and effort they’re putting into their coaching journey, and also a new client 💜.

3. After months of recovery following a full knee replacement, my mum was able to pick up our boys from school and kindly offered to take us all to McDonald’s for a treat tea! The boys were delighted and I had a night off cooking 💖.

4. New stationery, including these pastel felt-tips! I LOVE pastel colours, particularly lilac, and these always caught my eye, but the boys didn't see the appeal. My mum asked why I’d never bought them for myself…what a good question, why have I not bought them for myself? She then triumphantly announced that she was buying them for me, because she knew I’d love using them. I love writing and planning with multi-coloured pens and using these will bring me great joy. Thanks, mum, for celebrating my inner child 💝.

5. A little note - sitting on top of the dirty laundry pile - from my eldest son, reminding me how much he loves me 💘.

Thank you for celebrating my small joys with me.

I’d love to hear about a small joy you’ve experienced recently.
